Are you new to physical therapy? Here are some things that you can do to prepare and what you can expect during your first session:

Before Your Physical Therapy Session

  • Prepare a list of any and all questions that you have.If you have any questions about your rehabilitation regimen or other concerns, please don’t hesitate to voice them out. Also, to make the most out of your time with your physical therapist, list all of your questions ahead of time so that you can ask all of them during your treatment session.
  • Prepare your updated, comprehensive medical history.Take note of vital information regarding your medical history (even if they seem separate to the condition for which you are seeing a physical therapist). This includes any and all medications that you are drinking, medical conditions, and any injury or stressful events that you believe might have resulted in your condition.
  • Wear comfortable clothes.Physical therapy sessions typically involve moderate exercise and stretches, so it is important for you to wear comfortable clothes. Suggested clothing includes loose shirts or tank tops, loose pants or shorts, and proper-fitting footwear.
  • List down the names of your healthcare team.If you would like our physical therapist to keep your healthcare team updated about your evaluation and progress, please prepare a comprehensive list. This may include your physician and other healthcare professionals.

During Your First Physical Therapy Session

  • Medical History Review.First and foremost, our physical therapist will conduct a thorough medical history review. This involves asking if you or any of your family members have had diseases, procedures, or medications that may have contributed to your current condition.
  • Physical Examination. After a medical history review, our physical therapist will then perform a complete physical examination. This may include taking your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) to establish a baseline data. They may also ask you to perform different exercises to determine your current physical capabilities.
  • Developing Your Treatment Regimen.Based on your medical history and physical exam results, we will then develop a treatment regimen that best suits your needs. We will also consider your lifestyle, personal circumstances, and other related factors. We will also take your rehabilitation goals into consideration.

This is just a quick guideline from our home health care professionals at Amazing Care Home Health Services, LLC.
